This past weekend the husband dragged me to my first ever NASCAR race. I was terrified, uncertain, and a bit skeptical of the idea, but I did have a really cute outfit planned out so I was ready to head out and show it off! In fact, when Steven told me a few months ago about having tickets to the race the very first words out of my mouth were "Oh, I have the perfect outfit I can wear!" Priorities, people.
So Sunday morning I put on my super "cute" and super NASCAR inspired outfit and we headed for Talladega. We got to the raceway early enough to walk around and people watch for a bit. Let me just tell you, a NASCAR race is the perfect place for people watching, especially Talladega. People joke about Talladega being the biggest redneck party of the year, and you know what, I would have to agree. We saw grandmas in bikini tops, beer belly galore, and more confederate flag tattoos than I care to admit. It was quite a sight for the eye.
Despite the extreme amount of rednecks packed into one venue, we had a blast! Our seats were only a few rows up from the track and in prime spot to watch the famous Talladega super wrecks. The weather was gorgeous, but incredibly hot. Thermostats read temperatures reaching around 90 degrees, and we were sitting right in the middle of the sun. I did, however, get myself a nice little tan!
In the end, Denny Hamlin pulled out the win. Don't ask me what number he drives or anything else about him. The only driver I really know much about is Dale Jr. (thanks to the husband), so naturally I jumped on the bandwagon to support him (hence the #88 drawn on my shirt).
Talladega is definitely an experience that everyone should check off their bucket list. I'm really glad that we went this year to experience it in all of it's glory. Next year, however, I think I'm going to convince the husband to swing for the Kentucky Derby...
Boogity, Boogity, Boogity!
